Microsoft is cracking open the Lancer case once again. Gears of War: Reloaded, an enhanced remaster of the franchise’s first game, is officially launching on August 26 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, and PC—marking the first time the original Gears will be available on a Sony console. Priced at $39.99, this release is more than just a visual update—it’s a full celebration of the gritty cover-based shooter that helped define the Xbox 360 era.

Gears of War: Reloaded includes everything from the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, plus all its post-launch DLC, free of charge. That means the extra campaign chapter, every multiplayer map and mode, and an expanded list of classic character skins and unlockable cosmetics. For longtime fans, it’s the definitive edition. For newcomers, it’s a polished on-ramp into the brutal world of Sera.

Microsoft is touting major technical upgrades: native 4K visuals, 120 FPS support, and cross-platform play with progression tied to your account across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. The two-player campaign co-op and 8-player multiplayer modes are back and sharper than ever, designed to feel fresh without losing the series’ trademark intensity.

The most exciting part? Players who already owned Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before the announcement will receive Reloaded for free—no strings attached. It’s a rare but welcome move, especially in an era where remasters often come with a full retail price tag.

This announcement also reignites interest in Gears of War: E-Day, the newly announced prequel that still doesn’t have a release window. Until then, Reloaded seems set to hold down the fort and reintroduce the series to a new generation of players.

Between nostalgic appeal and technical overhaul, Gears of War: Reloaded looks to be the rare remaster that justifies its existence—not just by polishing the past but by making it accessible for the future.
