Marvel Studios brought its biggest card to Anaheim. During the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 on Friday, Kevin Feige walked out with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell to debut a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, the same Special Look that played exclusively in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer. It is online now, and it belongs almost entirely to Victor von Doom.
The footage opens on Doom seated on a throne, likely inside Castle Doomstadt in Latveria, with green mystical energy tracing glyphs across the floor in front of him. That single shot does a lot of work. It establishes the comic-accurate version of the character, the one who pairs engineering genius with sorcery, rather than a purely tech-driven villain.
From there the trailer fills in his motivation. Doom lost his wife and son, and that loss is what sends him after the Multiverse. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm speaks about him in the past tense, describing the man he used to be before the fall, and later says she knew he was already gone. Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards gets a confrontation of his own. The Fantastic Four connection is not subtext here, it is the spine of the movie.
The biggest piece of information for anyone tracking the multiverse math: Doom hails from Earth-828, the same reality as the Fantastic Four. His line about everyone else having lived stolen lives suggests he views Earth-616 as the timeline that survived at his world’s expense, which lines up neatly with where the Incursion story has been heading since Deadpool and Wolverine.
Action-wise, Doom makes quick work of Thor and then raises an army of Sentinels to march on the assembled heroes. The trailer cuts through new looks at the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Wakandans including Shuri and M’Baku, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four, with Loki and Steve Rogers both in the mix. Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Danny Ramirez’s Falcon, and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost all appear in the group shots Marvel released alongside the footage.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, and additional tickets went on sale the same day the trailer dropped.
