Marvel Television finally pulled the curtain back. Paul Bettany and James Spader joined Kevin Feige on stage at D23 in Anaheim to debut the first trailer and poster for VisionQuest, the Disney+ series that closes out the trilogy WandaVision started in 2021 and Agatha All Along continued in 2024. It streams October 14.
The setup: Vision has been rebooted, escaped the people who wanted to weaponize him, and gone into hiding. His memories from his old life are back, but the emotional connection to them is not, and that gap is what drives the series. Searching for something to anchor himself to, he starts consulting the AI personas buried in his own programming.
That is where the trailer gets strange in the best way. Vision hallucinates human versions of those personas, giving us F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady), E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire), J.A.R.V.I.S. (James D’Arcy back from Agent Carter), and Ultron himself, with Spader appearing in the flesh and sporting a heavy beard. The two of them share a mindscape inside Vision’s consciousness, both in human form, and the rest of the personas are not thrilled about Ultron poking around in there.
The external threats stack up fast. A young man played by Ruaridh Mollica turns up in the real world claiming to be Vision’s son. Todd Stashwick is Paladin, a bounty hunter on Vision’s trail. T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta, a robot who wants Vision dead and the planet with him. So much for the fan theory that this would be two actors in a room arguing about consciousness for six episodes.
Terry Matalas created the series and shares writing duties with Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura. Directors include Matalas, Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, and Vincenzo Natali. The cast also features Lauren Morais, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, and Jonathan Sayer.
Bettany got the biggest laugh of the panel talking about the character’s history, noting that Vision has been an Avenger, a father, and a partner to Wanda, made the ultimate sacrifice, and then inconveniently died several more times, which he said makes long term financial planning difficult.
VisionQuest premieres October 14 on Disney+.
