Fans of Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” series have a reason to celebrate. Scholastic has officially announced the upcoming release of “Sunrise on the Reaping,” the fifth novel in Collins’ acclaimed dystopian series. Scheduled for publication on March 18, 2025, this new installment returns to the grim world of Panem, exploring themes of power and control through the lens of Enlightenment philosophy.
Set 24 years before the original “The Hunger Games” and 40 years after “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” “Sunrise on the Reaping” begins with the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games. Collins, known for her intricate world-building and deep thematic explorations, has drawn inspiration from 18th-century Scottish philosopher David Hume for this novel.
“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,’” Collins explained in a statement. “The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”

The series, which began with “The Hunger Games” in 2008, has sold over 100 million copies worldwide and has been adapted into a successful film franchise by Lionsgate, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. While there is no announcement yet regarding the film adaptation of “Sunrise on the Reaping,” fans are hopeful given the previous successes.
Collins’ return to Panem is particularly timely, as the themes of misinformation and control are increasingly relevant in today’s society. Her previous novels have drawn upon Greek mythology and Roman gladiator games, but this new philosophical influence promises to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved series.
Readers are eagerly awaiting more details about the plot and characters of “Sunrise on the Reaping,” and the book is expected to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.
Stay tuned for more updates as the publication date approaches.
