Dave Bautista is in negotiations to play Kratos in the God of War live-action series from Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. The Prime Video adaptation is recasting its lead after Ryan Hurst, who had been filming the role, suffered an injury on set.

Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt in late June, roughly four months into the shoot. The injury required surgery and a long recovery, and production paused immediately after the incident. About two weeks later, Amazon and Sony decided to recast rather than wait out Hurst’s recovery, which reporting indicates could have delayed a return to filming into 2027. The recasting became public around July 16.

If a deal closes, prep is expected to begin in mid-August ahead of a mid-October production restart in Vancouver, where the show has been based since filming began in February.

Bautista’s background makes him a practical fit for a tight schedule. The former WWE star has kept a physical presence throughout his acting career and is coming off the upcoming Highlander film, which required him to bulk up. Kratos is defined by an imposing, muscular build, and Bautista is among the few actors who could step into that shape on short notice.

His casting also points to a possible new direction for the character. The first-look image of Hurst as Kratos, released in February, drew heavy criticism online, and a higher-profile lead signals a reset for how the series presents its protagonist.

God of War comes from writer, executive producer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. Prime Video ordered two seasons before filming started, with the seasons set to shoot back-to-back, and that plan remains in place. The series adapts the 2018 reboot of the PlayStation franchise, which moved Kratos from Greek mythology into the Norse pantheon.

The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson, as they travel to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. Along the way, Kratos works to teach his son how to be a better god while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

The role would be a rare series regular turn for Bautista, following the second season of Apple TV’s See. It reunites him with Amazon MGM Studios after The Wrecking Crew with Jason Momoa and the upcoming Road House 2 opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. He is represented by WME.

Some outlets report the production may recast additional main characters before cameras roll again, and that already filmed material could require reshoots. Those details have not been confirmed by the studios.
