Geek Freaks Interviews Returns as GFI With the Creators of Danny Trejo’s Year of the Devil

Geek Freaks Interviews is back, now going by GFI. The standalone interview show returns with new artwork and a simple format: one guest, the full conversation, and as much time as the story needs.

On the flagship Geek Freaks Podcast, interviews have to share space with news, reviews, and everything else we cover in a weekly episode. That usually means cutting a great conversation down to its best few minutes. The flagship will keep airing those excerpts. GFI is where the complete interviews live, so if a clip on Geek Freaks catches your attention, the rest of the conversation is waiting on GFI.

Guests will include comic writers and artists, actors, directors, and fellow podcasters. The focus stays on the work itself: how a project got made, what the creators were going for, and what they’re building next.

First Up: Year of the Devil

The first episode features Keith Arem and Chris Yates, co-creators of Year of the Devil, the supernatural action-horror graphic novel they made with Danny Trejo. Trejo stars as Diego, a warrior bound to the Devil and forced to hunt the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse across five historical eras.

Keith, whose credits include directing on the Call of Duty games, explains how the book started. Trejo was in the middle of a recording session for the Like a Dragon games, kept looking at Keith’s graphic novel The Exiled, and finally stopped to say he wanted to make one too. Chris, the writer of Marcus Walker: Kingslayer Protocol, talks about giving the book the grindhouse edge of Trejo’s films like From Dusk Till Dawn while giving Diego a real redemption arc.

The conversation also covers how Trejo’s own tattoos shaped Diego’s design, how the team worked with historian Matt Torres to handle Aztec history and the Toxcatl massacre with care, and why interior artist Frank Mazzoli (Void Rivals) was an easy choice. Keith also shares plans to build a working macuahuitl, the obsidian-edged Aztec sword Diego carries, and test it on conquistador helmets.
