DC Studios co-head Peter Safran has confirmed that Mason Thames will voice Dick Grayson in Dynamic Duo, the animated Robin origin movie arriving in theaters on September 22, 2028. Thames, the star of The Black Phone and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, was first reported for the role in September.

Safran said Thames actively chased the part. “He was just obsessed,” Safran told Collider, adding that Thames auditioned hard for the role and later visited the DC offices with his dad, where he wanted photos with everything in the company’s archives.

The voice cast also includes Logan Kim as Jason Todd, Lee Pace as Red Hood One and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood Two. The movie changes the comics origin by making Dick and Jason orphans and childhood friends. Dick is taken in by Bruce Wayne and becomes Robin, while Jason joins the criminal Red Hood Gang.

Arthur Mintz is directing for New Orleans-based Swaybox Studios, with a script by Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The film combines computer imagery, stop-motion and real-time puppetry, and it is a collaboration between DC Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, Matt Reeves’ 6th and Idaho and Swaybox.

Safran compared the Swaybox process to what Pixar did with Toy Story, a line he also used in an interview with IGN last month. He told Collider that shooting puppets with real cameras gives the action a physical feel that animation alone can’t reach. He also expects the process to move faster on a future film now that the studio has worked through the research and development.

Warner Bros. moved Dynamic Duo from June 30, 2028 to its September date in September, a shift that takes it away from Paramount’s Call of Duty movie. It is one of two Batman-related DC movies in 2028, along with Reeves’ The Batman: Part II.

Several questions remain open. Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider reported that Marsai Martin will voice Barbara Gordon and that Chris Pine received an offer to voice Batman, but neither has been confirmed. The film is reported to sit outside both the DCU and Reeves’ Batman films. An X account, @AtlantaDCFans, claimed the voice cast would play the same roles in live action in the DCU, and Logan Kim pushed back on that claim on social media.
