Bethesda Game Studios confirmed today that the next mainline Elder Scrolls game is called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The title and logo appeared at the end of Celebrating 40 Years of Bethesda Game Studios, an eight-minute video hosted by studio head Todd Howard and posted November 3. Bethesda did not announce a release date, release window, or platforms, and the video included no gameplay.
Near the end of the video, Howard acknowledged that fans constantly ask about the game and said the anniversary felt like the right moment to share its name. Bethesda said on X that development is continuing, but that it will be some time before the studio is ready to share more.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma marked the reveal on X, writing, “SENTINEL is the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls.”

A Hammerfell Connection
The reveal includes a passage attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell in 4E 206, five years after the events of Skyrim. It opens with the line, “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes.” The text goes on to mention visions of the future, an undone victory, and sands scattered by fate.
Sentinel is also the name of a major city in Hammerfell, the home province of the Redguards. The region previously appeared in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, and The Elder Scrolls Online.
Tom Warren of The Verge reported in late October that the game would be set in Hammerfell and that its story would explore the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves. The passage points in that direction, but Bethesda has not formally confirmed the setting or the story. Warren also reported the title and said it could be announced as soon as November, with reports pointing to Skyrim’s 15th anniversary on November 11. Bethesda’s reveal came eight days before that date.
How Fans Got There First
The subtitle had been circulating since August, when Sharma teased the game on social media after seeing a live playthrough and hid its eight-letter subtitle behind asterisks. Fans landed on Sentinel and connected it to a clue in Starfield’s character creator. Former Bethesda developer Michael Kirkbride, who worked on Morrowind, replied “yep” on Reddit when asked if that was the name.
What Comes Next
Bethesda first showed The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018 with a logo and a brief landscape shot, then shared little for more than eight years. In July, the studio said the game is its primary development focus and that most of the team is working on it. Howard told GQ in November 2025 that it was still a long way off, and Jason Schreier of Bloomberg has reported that it is at least two years away.
