PlayStation is pulling 551 films and TV series from UK customers’ video libraries on September 1, 2026, and the people who paid for them are not getting their money back. The titles were all distributed by production company StudioCanal, and a licensing agreement between Sony and the studio has come to an end. Once it lapses, the content disappears from the PlayStation Store and from the accounts of anyone who already bought it.
A notice now live on PlayStation’s UK legal page tells buyers that, due to expiring content licensing agreements, they will lose access to their previously purchased StudioCanal content and that it will be removed from their video library. There is no mention of compensation, store credit, or any other make-good for the affected purchases.
The list reads like a run through three decades of action and cult favorites. Terminator 2, Total Recall, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, From Dusk Till Dawn, Cliffhanger, the first three Rambo films, Bridget Jones’ Diary, The Deer Hunter, Tekken, and Sharknado are all on it. PlayStation has reproduced the full slate of 551 affected titles on its site for owners who want to check what they are about to lose.
The news surfaced when an X user posted the removal notice they had received from PlayStation this week, and outlets picked it up from there. Reporters have since contacted Sony to ask whether refunds or any form of compensation will be offered, and so far the company has not answered that question. The notice itself stays silent on the subject.
This is not the first time PlayStation owners have watched purchased StudioCanal content vanish. Buyers in Germany and Austria lost their StudioCanal libraries back in 2022 under nearly identical circumstances. Sony also stopped selling and renting movies and TV through the PlayStation Store in August 2021, which means the company exited the video business years ago and is now reclaiming content people bought before that exit. PS5 and PS4 owners can still purchase video through Sony Pictures Core, but that does nothing for the libraries about to be wiped.
The removal lands squarely on the digital ownership debate that keeps resurfacing across games and media. A purchase that can be revoked when a backend licensing deal expires is functionally a rental with no end date listed at checkout. For a catalog this size, on a platform this large, the September 1 deadline turns an abstract worry about digital storefronts into a concrete loss for anyone in the UK who bought a StudioCanal film expecting to keep it.
