DC Studios’ developing Bane and Deathstroke movie may be taking an unexpected step forward. According to recent reporting, Greg Mottola is high on the list to direct the untitled project, which would bring two of DC’s most dangerous tactical villains into the spotlight.

Mottola is best known for directing Superbad, Adventureland, and Confess, Fletch, but his connection to DC is not coming out of nowhere. He also directed episodes of Peacemaker, giving him experience inside James Gunn and Peter Safran’s growing DC Studios world. That matters, especially for a project that could easily become just another grim villain movie if handled without the right balance of tone, character, and purpose.

The Bane and Deathstroke film has been in development since 2024, with Matthew Orton attached to write the script. Orton’s credits include Captain America: Brave New World, and while plot details remain unclear, the pairing alone gives DC a lot to work with. Bane is not just a brute. At his best, he is one of Batman’s most intelligent and physically imposing enemies, famous for breaking Batman in the Knightfall storyline. Deathstroke, also known as Slade Wilson, is a calculating mercenary whose stories often blur the line between villain, antihero, and professional weapon.

That combination could make this more than a standard Batman-adjacent spinoff. A Bane and Deathstroke movie has the potential to explore the criminal, military, and mercenary side of the DC Universe without needing to center everything around Batman himself. If DC Studios wants to build a world that feels bigger than its most famous heroes, projects like this are where that strategy gets tested.

Mottola’s possible involvement is interesting because his best work is often built around character tension, awkward relationships, and people trying to survive bad decisions. That may sound far away from Bane and Deathstroke on paper, but it could be exactly what the movie needs. A film about two elite killers cannot only be about muscle, masks, and fight choreography. It needs a sharp point of view.

The bigger question is how this fits into the overall DCU. DC Studios has already shown interest in genre variety, with projects like Clayface leaning into horror and Peacemaker mixing superhero action with dark comedy and emotional damage. A Bane and Deathstroke film could become DC’s grounded crime thriller, especially if it treats both characters as strategic threats instead of simply using them as obstacles for a future Batman.

There is still a lot we do not know. No cast has been announced, the story remains under wraps, and the project does not have a release date. Reports also suggest it is still in early development, which means things can change quickly. But the fact that a director is reportedly being discussed is a sign that DC has not forgotten about the project.

For fans, the appeal is pretty clear. Bane and Deathstroke are two characters who can carry a darker, more tactical corner of the DC Universe. The challenge will be making the movie feel necessary rather than random. If Mottola does land the job, his background could bring a more character-driven approach than people expect from a movie built around two of DC’s most dangerous villains.
