Amazon MGM Studios’ long-developing Mass Effect television series is gaining momentum with a major creative hire. Doug Jung, known for Star Trek Beyond and Mindhunter, has been tapped as the project’s showrunner. He will collaborate with screenwriter Dan Casey, who has been developing the script for nearly a year.

The Mass Effect series adapts one of the most beloved sci-fi video game franchises of all time. Originally developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, Mass Effect debuted in 2007 and quickly became known for its rich world-building, complex characters, and cinematic storytelling. The main trilogy followed Commander Shepard, a human soldier tasked with uniting the galaxy against the Reapers, an ancient machine race bent on destruction.
Since its announcement in 2021, the television adaptation has remained in early development as Amazon MGM Studios worked to assemble the right creative team. The addition of Jung signals a shift toward active production. His experience on large-scale, character-driven projects makes him a strong choice to translate the epic narrative of Mass Effect to the screen.

Jung’s past credits include showrunning Apple TV+’s The Chief of War, producing for Netflix’s Mindhunter, and contributing to Star Trek Beyond’s screenplay. He brings both sci-fi and prestige television experience to the table. Casey remains attached as lead writer, and the duo will executive produce the series alongside key names from both Amazon and Electronic Arts, including Mass Effect veteran Michael Gamble.
With BioWare currently developing the fifth game in the franchise, Mass Effect is enjoying renewed attention. The Amazon series could serve as a major touchpoint for new and longtime fans alike, if it can successfully capture the depth and spirit of the games.
No release date or casting details have been announced yet, but this latest update is a promising sign that the galaxy-spanning adventure may soon make its way to television screens.
