Beau Willimon remains attached as writer on the first Game of Thrones feature film
Warner Bros. will release Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest in theaters on June 1, 2029. Owen Harris will direct the film from a screenplay by Beau Willimon.
Harris comes to the project from HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, where he directed three episodes of the six-episode first season. His fifth-episode Trial of Seven sequence drew strong praise. His earlier credits include the Black Mirror episodes “Be Right Back” and “San Junipero,” and his feature debut, Kill Your Friends, in 2015.
Willimon, the former showrunner of House of Cards and a writer on Andor, was first linked to the project in March, when Page Six Hollywood reported he had already submitted a draft. Warner Bros. confirmed him as writer at its CinemaCon presentation on April 14, 2026, where it also announced the title.
The film draws on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and follows Aegon I Targaryen, one of the few survivors of the Doom of Valyria, as he travels to Westeros and conquers each realm. Aegon’s sisters and queens, Visenya and Rhaenys, ride alongside him on the dragons Vhagar and Meraxes, with Aegon on Balerion. The conquest brought six of the Seven Kingdoms under one ruler; Dorne remained independent.
Aegon’s story has been in development at HBO and Warner Bros. in several forms. A 2017 pitch from Rand Ravich and Far Shariat was among the first HBO turned down. In February 2024, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin was attached to a series version. Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 6 shareholder letter listed the film among its releases “beyond 2027.”
No cast has been announced.
The film arrives after the remaining Westeros series on HBO. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 premieres in 2027, and the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon follows in 2028.
