Marvel Studios packed its San Diego Comic-Con panel with cast reveals and release dates, but one of the loudest moments came from a guy in the audience who was not on the schedule. Ryan Reynolds turned up in the crowd during the Avengers: Doomsday portion of the panel wearing a brand new gray and black Deadpool suit, and within hours the internet had settled on a nickname for it.
The Bit
Reynolds worked the moment like a planted fan at a Q&A. Holding a microphone, he introduced himself as “Ricky,” claimed he was only cosplaying, and started asking questions. His first went to Paul Rudd, wanting to know why Thor was crying, a callback to the scene in Deadpool & Wolverine where Wade sees a future version of himself cradled by a tearful God of Thunder. Rudd fired back that Thor is a Wrexham fan, poking at Reynolds co-owning the Welsh soccer club.
Then came the real pitch. “Ricky” asked when Avengers: Doomsday starts filming and suggested that a panel like this was an expensive way to announce a movie. Robert Downey Jr. informed him the film was already “in the can,” which left Reynolds visibly disappointed that there would be no reshoots or last-minute additions to sneak into.
Where the Gray Suit Comes From
The costume was the part that got comic readers talking. The gray and black color scheme traces back to Marvel’s X-Force comics, where the covert team swapped brighter uniforms for darker stealth gear. Fans zeroed in specifically on Rick Remender’s acclaimed Uncanny X-Force run, where Wade wore a gray and black suit as part of Wolverine’s kill squad. This palette had never shown up in live action before, so the appearance counted as the debut of that version of the suit.
It is not the only time Wade has gone gray on screen. In Deadpool 2, his suit turned gray after getting coated in ash during the finale. But that was an accident of the plot. The tailored X-Force styling here, complete with brown utility pouches, gold accents, and a recolored belt buckle, is a deliberate homage.
Why It Is Called JeanPool
Here is the joke that took over. Once people got a close look, the suit appeared to be made almost entirely of denim, complete with a small Canadian flag on the chest. In other words, Deadpool showed up to Hall H in a full Canadian tuxedo. Reynolds leaned all the way in and later posted an unmasked photo of himself in it.
Fans immediately christened it “JeanPool,” a double gag that works on the denim and doubles as a nod to Jean Grey, the X-Men powerhouse whose name the gray suit now shares. It is exactly the kind of layered pun that fits Wade Wilson, ridiculous on the surface and stitched together from deep X-Men lore underneath.
The Part Everyone Is Actually Wondering About
The stunt landed in the middle of the Doomsday hype, and it was left unexplained why Reynolds chose the gray suit over the familiar red and black. That silence did the work Marvel wanted. A new, more comic-accurate costume debuting at the Doomsday panel reads like a tease, especially with reporting framing Reynolds as a multiverse wildcard for the film rather than a full Avenger. Marvel stopped short of confirming anything, and a new Deadpool project is also in development separately.
So for now it stays a perfect Reynolds move. Loud enough to dominate the coverage, vague enough to keep the speculation running, and goofy enough that the lasting takeaway is a denim pun. The con floors of 2027 have already been warned.
