Asa Germann is joining Marvel Studios’ X-Men as Warren Worthington III, the winged mutant known as Angel. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on September 10, reporting that Germann is in final talks for the role, and Deadline followed by confirming the casting through its own sources. Marvel has not commented.
Germann first came to Marvel’s attention through the Cyclops search. He screen tested for Scott Summers over the summer, and after Kit Connor landed that part, the studio offered Germann the role of Warren. THR’s August report on the Cyclops tests had left the door open for Marvel finding him a different character.
From Godolkin to Xavier’s
Germann broke out as Sam Riordan on Prime Video’s Gen V, the Boys spinoff set at Godolkin University. Sam is a super-strong, nearly indestructible student carrying a lot of damage from his past, and Germann brought the character over to The Boys as well. Gen V was canceled after its second season. Earlier this year he played Lucas Bowden in Scream 7, where he dies on a bar tap ornament courtesy of Ghostface.
The 28-year-old goes from playing a supe in the Vought universe to one of the founding members of Marvel’s mutant team.
Who Angel Is
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Warren in X-Men #1 in 1963 as one of Charles Xavier’s first five students, alongside Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, and Iceman. He’s the son of a wealthy family, born with large feathered wings that let him fly, and he keeps his mutation hidden before joining the team.
His most famous storyline runs straight through the villain already cast in this movie. During the Mutant Massacre, Mister Sinister’s Marauders pinned Warren’s wings, and the injuries eventually cost him both of them. Apocalypse then rebuilt him with metal wings that fire razor-sharp feathers, turning him into the blue-skinned Archangel and making him one of his Horsemen. Warren has since served on X-Factor, X-Force, the Defenders, and the Champions of Los Angeles.
He’s been on the big screen twice. Ben Foster played Warren in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, where his father develops the mutant cure, and Cayden Boyd played the younger version in that film’s flashback. Ben Hardy took over in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse as a Berlin cage fighter who becomes Archangel. Neither film gave the character much screen time.
The Team So Far
Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts*, is directing X-Men from a screenplay by Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear, Thunderbolts*). Marvel revealed the first round of cast at D23 in Anaheim on August 14:
- Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, following her debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
- Kit Connor as Cyclops
- Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier
- Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
- Inde Navarrette as Rogue
- Maya Boyd as Storm
- Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury, one of Mister Sinister’s aliases
Kevin Feige said onstage that the list wasn’t complete, and Germann is the first addition since D23.
With Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Angel cast, Beast and Iceman are the two founding members still without actors. SlashFilm points to past comments from Lee Sung Jin suggesting the movie could use the original lineup. Filling both roles would put all five on the same team for the first time in a live-action film. The Last Stand technically had every original member in the movie, but Cyclops dies early and Warren never joins the team.
Rogue, Storm, and Emma Frost in the cast mean the film is pulling from well past the 1963 roster. Nerdist has floated the idea that Emma could run a rival school with its own students who end up switching sides. Whether Wolverine appears at all is still unknown.
X-Men opens in theaters on May 5, 2028.
