Warner Bros. and Legendary pulled back the curtain on their Minecraft sequel at Minecraft Live on May 30, and the reveal came packed with more than just a title. The announcement arrived through a new set video shot in New Zealand featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Kirsten Dunst, director Jared Hess, and Mojang Studios chief creative officer Jens Bergensten.
The title itself, A Minecraft Movie Squared, came through a bit between the two leads. Momoa claimed he and Black had been fighting over who got to announce the official name, insisting he won, but before he could finish the video, it cut to TommyInnit and Quackity, who hijacked the reveal. The footage then returned to Black and Momoa, who knocked on a door to introduce Kirsten Dunst as Alex.
Dunst is the headline addition. The Academy Award nominee joins as Alex, one of Minecraft’s most recognizable protagonists, and her arrival sets up the Steve and Alex pairing longtime players know from the game. Her casting suggests the sequel may lean harder into the core characters familiar to Minecraft fans.

The returning roster is deep. Jack Black is back as Steve, a former doorknob salesman who spent years living in the Overworld, and Jason Momoa returns as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a video game store owner and former champion. Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge are all also confirmed to return. Berry appears in the set video joking that he cannot yet reveal who he is playing, and IMDb currently lists him among the sequel’s cast.

The cast is teasing a bigger world this time. Black and Momoa said there is “a lot of new in this movie,” while Brooks promised the sequel would take fans much deeper into the Minecraft world. From the set, the two leads teased new biomes, new characters, and new mobs alongside some returning favorites. There has also been speculation, based on the first look footage, that the iconic Minecraft figure Herobrine could factor into the story, though nothing has been confirmed.
Production is well underway. The sequel is filming in New Zealand with support from Weta, the Wellington-based visual effects company, and Momoa had revealed earlier in 2026 that filming would begin in late April. Jared Hess returns to direct, with Chris Galletta co-writing the screenplay.
Warner Bros. is also turning the reveal into a fan event. Mojang is planning a build challenge where the winning build will actually appear in the movie or its end credits, with private screenings offered for the finalists, according to Bergensten.
The sequel follows a film that became a genuine phenomenon. Despite poor reviews from critics, the first movie was a massive box office success, grossing $960 million worldwide off a record $163 million domestic opening. It is likely the film helped spark both in-game spending and base game sales for a series that has sold more than 300 million copies worldwide.
A Minecraft Movie Squared is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
