The first trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil gives the long-running franchise a very different live-action tone. Instead of opening with elite agents, heavily armed squads, or a direct retelling of one of the games, this version follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier pulled into a nightmare as an outbreak spirals out of control.
That setup immediately gives the movie a more grounded survival-horror feel. Bryan is not Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, or Chris Redfield. He is a regular guy trying to make it through one horrifying night, which makes the danger feel more immediate. The trailer leans into fear, confusion, and helplessness rather than big action spectacle.

Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, appears to be approaching Resident Evil as a horror movie first. The footage suggests a focus on body horror, infected creatures, and tense set pieces rather than a simple zombie outbreak. That feels closer to the anxiety of playing the games, where every new hallway, abandoned house, or dark corner can turn into a threat.

The trailer also makes an interesting choice by telling an original story inside the Resident Evil universe. That could be a smart move for a franchise that has had mixed results on the big screen. Instead of trying to compress decades of lore into one movie, Cregger seems focused on capturing the feeling of Resident Evil: isolation, limited control, escalating danger, and the sense that something much bigger and more sinister is happening in the background.
The big question is whether fans will embrace a Resident Evil movie without the familiar game heroes front and center. For some, that may be a tough sell. For others, this could be exactly what the franchise needs: a scary, contained story that respects the world without being buried under callbacks.
Based on the trailer, Resident Evil looks darker, colder, and more horror-driven than past live-action versions. If Cregger can balance original storytelling with the franchise’s signature atmosphere, this could be one of the more promising video game adaptations on the way.
