Hideo Kojima showed up at the end of the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast with the casting announcement for Physint. Bill Skarsgård is the lead, playing the player character in the action-espionage game Kojima has called the culmination of more than 40 years of his career.

“I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård,” Kojima said in the press release. On the pairing, he added that he and Skarsgård have been fans of each other’s work for a long time and decided to embark on the new adventure together.

Kojima also debuted a new visual for the game, a poster he shot himself, featuring Skarsgård alongside Charlee Fraser. The tagline reads “The Next Cold War Begins.” Kojima said he ran the costume fittings, talent scans, and camera tests with both actors personally earlier this year, and that the sessions gave him confidence in where the project is headed.

Skarsgård joins a cast that already includes Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima said casting, scanning, and collaborations with outside creators are all still in progress, with more names to announce.

The Casting Itself

Skarsgård is the Pennywise of the two It films and returned to the role in It: Welcome to Derry for HBO Max last year, where he also served as executive producer. His other credits include Nosferatu, Barbarian, The Crow, Atomic Blonde, The Devil All the Time, Boy Kills World, and John Wick: Chapter 4, where he played the Marquis. On television he was in Clark, Castle Rock, and Hemlock Grove.

The three supporting roles are an international spread that fits a spy story. Fraser played Mary Jabassa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Don Lee, also credited as Ma Dong-seok, came out of Train to Busan and The Roundup films and appeared in Eternals. Hamabe starred in Godzilla Minus One.

Why This Announcement Carries Weight

Physint lost its publisher one week ago. On September 10, PlayStation Studios posted that it had decided to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on the project. Kojima responded on X with a different framing of the same events, saying the studio received unexpected notice in mid-June that PlayStation Studios would cancel Physint outright, and that Kojima Productions spent the following three months looking for a new partner before landing on Xbox.

That makes both of Kojima’s current games Xbox projects. Xbox was already publishing OD, the horror game he is making with Jordan Peele. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said in a statement that the company was honored Kojima chose Xbox for Physint, and that his ambition to challenge conventions is the kind of creativity Xbox wants to back.

Jason Schreier’s reporting at Bloomberg fills in Sony’s side. Sources familiar with the project pointed to budget, potential profitability, and exclusivity. Death Stranding and its sequel did not meet PlayStation’s revenue expectations. Physint had missed deadlines, was tracking well over its original budget, and is still years from release. Sony also did not want to fund a game at that scale without permanent exclusivity.

PC is part of the math. Sony has reportedly stopped porting its big single-player games to PC, so it would not have earned anything from a PC release of Physint under another publisher. Xbox puts everything on PC and plans to do the same here. The Xbox agreement also covers film and TV rights for both Physint and OD. “Betting on Kojima-san is an easy call,” an Xbox spokesperson told Bloomberg.

Two open questions came out of the split and neither has been answered. Kojima was building Physint with Decima, the engine owned by Sony’s Guerrilla Games, and no replacement has been named. He was also working with Sony Pictures and Columbia on the film side of the project, and that relationship is gone with the publishing deal.

What Is Still Unknown

Kojima described Physint as a project that will redefine action-espionage outside the frameworks of existing digital entertainment genres. What that means in practice is still unclear. No gameplay footage ran during the panel, no story details were given, and Skarsgård’s character has not been described. There is no release window and the title is still provisional.

OD got its own update in the same segment. Performance capture and ADR resumed this year after a pause, and Kojima said Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer are turning in strong work. He called it a completely new kind of game built to test the thresholds of fear.
