The most cursed project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally been laid to rest. After roughly seven years of development, Marvel’s Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali is over, and this time the confirmation comes from the star himself.
Speaking to GQ ahead of his new Amazon MGM action film, Ali put the whole saga to bed with a pointed message aimed squarely at the studio. He noted that he was under contract, that Marvel has billions of dollars, and that if the studio had actually wanted to make the movie, it would have gotten made. He said he has moved on, and that any lingering questions about why the film collapsed belong to Marvel, not to him. It is the bluntest the normally reserved Oscar winner has ever been about the situation, and it reads as a clear signal that whatever version of Blade eventually reaches theaters, it will not star him.
A Response to Feige’s Mea Culpa
Ali’s comments landed partly in reply to Kevin Feige, who addressed the failed project on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The Marvel Studios president did not hold back on his own accountability, admitting he feels like a gigantic loser and failure for never getting Ali into theaters as the Daywalker.
Feige framed the collapse as a casualty of Marvel’s broader shift toward quality over quantity. He explained that the studio reached a point where it would only accept material it considered insanely great, and Blade simply never cleared that bar. The team did not feel confident it could elevate the script into something great during production, and Feige said they did not want to do that to Ali or to themselves. In other words, Marvel chose to walk away rather than rush a version nobody believed in.
Seven Years of False Starts
The scale of this development mess is hard to overstate. Marvel announced Ali as the next Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the same year he collected his second Academy Award. The excitement was enormous. A two-time Oscar winner stepping into a beloved Marvel role felt like a coup.
Then the wheels came off. The project churned through multiple directors, including Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, and cycled through at least five writers as Marvel struggled to lock a version of the character worth filming. The studio explored several distinct concepts, among them period-piece takes set in the past. One scrapped version reportedly centered on Blade’s daughter and pushed Ali to the margins entirely. Some of the costumes from that abandoned draft were eventually repurposed for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Through all of it, Ali never appeared in live action as Blade, contributing only a voice cameo in 2021’s Eternals.
Ali Lands on His Feet
There is a genuine bright side here, at least for the actor. Ali and Bassam Tariq, one of Blade’s former directors, reunited for a different project, the upcoming Amazon MGM action film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The swordwork Ali trained in during Blade’s pre-production ended up feeding directly into his new role, and he has said he is happy with how things worked out. When he weighs the two paths, he is content taking the one he got.
What Comes Next for the Character
One thread worth watching, though it remains firmly in rumor territory, is the idea that Marvel may not be finished with Blade as a character even if it is finished with this film. Industry scooper Jeff Sneider has suggested the vampire hunter could be reintroduced through a Midnight Sons team-up rather than a solo outing. Nothing about that is official, so treat it as speculation for now. What is certain is that the standalone Blade movie fans were promised in 2019 is not happening, and the version of the character audiences imagined with Ali at the center never made it out of the shadows.
