Casper the Friendly Ghost is heading back to live action, and this time the project is being developed for Disney+. The new series is still in the early stages, but the creative team already makes it one of the more interesting family-friendly reboot projects currently in development.
The show comes from Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, who previously worked on Disney+’s Goosebumps series. Letterman is set to direct, with both Letterman and Winston writing and executive producing. Steven Spielberg is also attached as an executive producer, which is especially notable since he executive produced the 1995 Casper movie starring Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, and Devon Sawa.

Details about the story are being kept quiet for now, but the new version is being described as a modern update of the classic ghost story. Reports suggest the series may take a slightly darker approach, with comparisons being made to how Wednesday reimagined The Addams Family for a new audience. That does not necessarily mean Casper is becoming straight horror, but it does suggest Disney+ may be looking for something with more atmosphere, mystery, and edge than a simple nostalgia play.
That direction makes sense. Casper has always worked best when the story balances sweetness with sadness. The 1995 movie became a favorite for a generation because it was not just about a cute ghost haunting a mansion. It was about loneliness, grief, friendship, and the desire to be seen. A modern series could tap into those ideas while giving the character a new mystery-driven format that works better for streaming.
The project also arrives at a time when studios continue to look for recognizable family and young-adult properties that can be refreshed without losing their original appeal. Goosebumps gave Disney+ a supernatural series that could play to both younger audiences and adults who grew up with the brand. Casper has a similar advantage, especially with the 1995 movie now hitting its 30-year milestone.
No cast has been announced, and there is no release window yet. Since the series is still in early development, it is also too soon to know whether Christina Ricci, Devon Sawa, or anyone from the original film could be involved. For now, the biggest takeaway is that Casper is being positioned for a real comeback, not just as a throwback character, but as a ghost story with room to grow.
If Disney+ can keep the heart of the character intact while giving the world around him a little more mystery, this could be a smart revival. Casper does not need to be reinvented into something unrecognizable. He just needs a story that remembers why people cared about him in the first place.
