FernGully: The Last Rainforest is getting a live-action remake, with Amazon MGM Studios developing the project and Marielle Heller attached to write and direct.
The original 1992 animated film followed Crysta, a fairy living in the rainforest, as she teams up with a human named Zak to stop the destruction of their world. Over time, the movie built a lasting reputation for its environmental message, colorful fantasy setting, and memorable voice cast that included Robin Williams and Tim Curry.

This new version is still in the early stages, so there is no cast or release date yet. Even so, Heller’s involvement gives the project a little more personality than the average remake announcement. She is not the kind of filmmaker people usually associate with a broad studio nostalgia play, which makes the choice stand out.

The bigger question is whether a live-action FernGully can hold onto what made the original work. The animated movie was earnest, a little strange, and very direct about its message. That is a big part of why people still talk about it. If the remake keeps that heart instead of sanding everything down into something safer, this could be one of the more interesting revival projects in the works.
At the very least, it is a reminder that studios are still looking to 90s titles with built-in recognition. The difference here is that FernGully comes with a message that still feels current, which gives this remake a stronger reason to exist than most.
