Wizards of the Coast and Blizzard Entertainment have officially confirmed Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, a full crossover expansion that brings the world of Azeroth to the 5e tabletop for the first time in two decades. Announced during a press briefing ahead of Gen Con, the book is the flagship launch of D&D’s new Universes Beyond line, the initiative that will adapt outside pop culture franchises into official D&D releases. A leak the week before tipped the announcement early, but Wizards still had plenty left to reveal.

The last time World of Warcraft touched the tabletop was 2005, with the World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game. This new collaboration marks a full return, built from the ground up on the 2024 5e ruleset.

Two Release Dates and Preorders Are Live

D&D: World of Warcraft releases to the general public on November 17, 2026, but there’s an earlier path in. Preorders went live July 30 and are available now through D&D Beyond, the official D&D store, participating local game stores, and virtual tabletop platforms like Roll20. Preordering through D&D Beyond or a local game store in the early release program gets the book into your hands on November 3, two weeks ahead of the wide release. Local game store early access covers the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Pricing breaks down across several options. The digital expansion runs $39.99 and the physical book $59.99. An Ultimate Bundle is priced at $124.99, with a Collector’s Edition Ultimate Bundle at $144.99. The Icecrown Citadel Map Pack and digital adventure is a separate $19.99, and the Dungeon Master’s Screen is $24.99. There’s also a standard alternate “hobby” cover offered at the same price as the base book, plus the foil-and-sculpted slipcase treatment reserved for the Collector’s Edition.

Thirteen Classes, Six New Subclasses

Every one of World of Warcraft’s thirteen classes makes the jump, carrying over 40 specializations. Each class builds on its Player’s Handbook foundation and layers on new options inspired by its WoW spec.

Six brand new subclasses headline the roster: the Oath of the Ebon Blade and Oath of the Holy for Paladins, the Demon Hunter for Rangers, the Shadow Domain and Discipline Domain for Clerics, and the Path of the Elements for Barbarians. Three more subclasses get updated treatments: the Swashbuckler Rogue, the Path of the Spiritual Guardian Barbarian, and the Warrior of Mystic Brews Monk.

Sixteen Species From Across Azeroth

The book adds sixteen playable species. Eleven are new to D&D: Dracthyr, Draenei, Earthen, Forsaken, Haranir, Mechagnome, Pandaren, Tauren, Troll, Vulpera, and Worgen. The other five are revised versions of existing D&D staples remapped for Azeroth: Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Human, and Orc.

There’s a clever wrinkle tying species into the setting. Your choice can grant a starting Renown Score with one of Azeroth’s factions, so whether you ride out for the Horde or the Alliance, your allegiance is written into your character’s origin from the start.

The Numbers Behind the Book

D&D: World of Warcraft comes loaded. It packs 60-plus new spells, including signature WoW abilities like Rune Strike, Demon Spikes, and Moonfire. Players get 30-plus new magic items, including popular mounts and companion creatures, and more than ten professions to fill downtime with crafting and tinkering.

Dungeon Masters get 50-plus new monsters and 30 dungeon boss stat blocks built for climactic encounters. Seven iconic World of Warcraft dungeons have been rebuilt for tabletop play: Azjol-Nerub, Blackfathom Deeps, Deadmines, Dire Maul, Onyxia’s Lair, Scarlet Monastery, and Shadowfang Keep.

Rounding it out are 20-plus factions, each with renown rewards built on the Dungeon Master’s Guide renown system. Grind reputation with a smaller group for a quick favor, or pledge to a single banner and rally to the cause.

The Lich King Awaits in Icecrown Citadel

The standout companion release is the Icecrown Citadel Map Pack and Digital Adventure, adapting one of WoW’s most famous raids. It includes five double-sided 22-by-30-inch poster maps covering ten of the raid’s most iconic encounters, two token sheets to fill them with the Lich King’s forces, and a complete digital adventure.

That adventure is a rarity for 5e: high-level content spanning levels 16 to 20 across five chapters, ten maps, and ten boss encounters. Sixteen new magic items are woven throughout, including Frostmourne, Invincible, and the Bone Warden’s Splitter.

In-Game Rewards Bridge the Two Worlds

For players who live in both worlds, the bundles carry a real incentive. Preordering unlocks actual World of Warcraft in-game items delivered by code, including the Black Dragon Mount, Gazer pet, Mimic Chest toy, and Mimic Chest decor. Digital extras round out the bundles too, among them the Icy Throne dice set, Horde and Alliance character sheet frames, and a Season of Champions mini-adventure. Redeeming the in-game loot requires a Battle.net account and an active WoW subscription, and it does not work with WoW Classic.

What It Means for D&D

D&D: World of Warcraft anchors the Season of Champions covering the back half of 2026. It’s followed in 2027 by the Season of Survival, which revives the Dark Sun setting, and the Season of Sword & Sorcery, which brings back Greyhawk.

More than any single stat block or subclass, the bigger story is the Universes Beyond banner itself. Wizards is doing for D&D what it has already done for Magic: The Gathering, opening the door to licensed crossovers with outside franchises. Launching that line with a partner as massive as World of Warcraft is a statement of intent. Azeroth is just the first stop.
