Marvel has pulled the plug on Wonder Man at Disney+, and the timing is the part that stings. The streamer rescinded a Season 2 renewal it had handed out only a few months earlier, leaving one of the best reviewed Marvel shows in years dead after a single season.
Variety was first to report the news on July 30, 2026. Disney announced the Season 2 pickup back in March, roughly two months after the series premiered in January. That renewal was already an anomaly, since nearly every live-action Marvel series on Disney+ has been one and done. Now the show joins that pile anyway, just with a stranger path to get there.
According to sources, a writers’ room for Season 2 was never actually opened, and the show’s writers have since been released to pursue other projects. Marvel did not give an official reason for the reversal. One person with knowledge of the situation said the characters could still turn up in other Marvel projects down the line, which is the kind of vague reassurance fans have learned to hold loosely.
What makes this one hurt is that Wonder Man worked. Season 1 sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his turn as Simon Williams. An acting nomination is rare air for a live-action Marvel adaptation, and the show got there. On the ratings side, it opened strong with 618 million minutes of viewing during its premiere week per Nielsen, though it dropped out of the streaming top 10 in the weeks after.
The show followed aspiring actor Simon Williams, who is trying and failing to get his Hollywood career going, until a chance meeting with washed-up actor Trevor Slattery pulls him toward a remake of his favorite childhood superhero film, also called Wonder Man. Ben Kingsley reprised Slattery from his earlier MCU appearances, and the supporting cast included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Buric, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby. It was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Guest as showrunner and Cretton directing the first two episodes. Cretton is also the filmmaker behind the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so this is not a case of Marvel losing faith in the people involved.
The whiplash is almost comedic. The cancellation landed just ten days after Cretton told Collider he was hopeful production on Season 2 could start this year. Abdul-Mateen took the news in stride publicly, posting on Instagram that the show would not return and adding that everything will shake out. He thanked the people who watched and said the thing he was proudest of was simple, that the show worked.
There is a bigger pattern worth sitting with here. With Wonder Man gone, Loki and Daredevil: Born Again are the only live-action Marvel series on Disney+ to make it past a single season. A show can pull critical acclaim, an Emmy nomination and a genuinely fresh premise, and still get erased before the room even opens. Whatever Marvel’s television strategy is right now, sustaining shows does not appear to be part of it, and Wonder Man is the clearest evidence yet.
