During the “Spotlight on Matt Dinniman” panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, series author Matt Dinniman revealed that audiobook narrator Jeff Hays will voice Princess Donut in Peacock’s live-action adaptation of Dungeon Crawler Carl. It is the first casting announcement since the show was ordered to series at Peacock last month, and it is exactly the name the fandom had been hoping to hear.
For anyone who has experienced the story through Audible, this one needs no explanation. Hays has narrated all eight of the currently released DCC books, voicing every character in Dungeon Crawler World himself, from Carl to Mordecai to the unhinged System AI, and his take on the tiara-wearing talking cat has become a fan favorite in its own right. Handing him the role in live-action is the kind of choice that looks obvious in hindsight, which is usually the sign that a production is paying attention.
The mechanics of how Hays will play Donut on screen are where this gets interesting. He will not simply be recording lines in a booth after the fact. Hays told Collider that the production plans to have him on set for the duration of the shoot so he can perform opposite Carl in real time, reacting to whoever ends up in the lead role. The banter between Carl and Donut is the engine that makes the crawl work, and building that chemistry live rather than stitching it together in post is a meaningful commitment to getting the partnership right.
Hays is not only lending his voice, either. He serves as narrator and executive producer on the series under his Soundbooth Theater banner, so his fingerprints extend beyond the recording of a single character. The wider production team carries real weight as well. Chris Yost, a longtime writer with Marvel Studios, is attached as showrunner, with Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald executive producing and Dinniman on board as co-executive producer.
The numbers explain why this casting matters so much. The DCC series currently runs eight books out of a planned ten, has sold more than 14 million copies across all formats, and the Hays-narrated audiobooks have logged more than 140 million listening hours on Audible. For a large share of that audience, the sound of these characters is inseparable from Hays himself. Recasting Donut with a different voice would have risked the exact disconnect that sinks book-to-screen adaptations.
Here is where I will offer a read on it. This single announcement tells us more about the production’s priorities than the greenlight itself did. Studios adapting a beloved property have every incentive to reach for a recognizable Hollywood name to anchor the marketing, and there was a real chance that the machine would run that way here too. Choosing the narrator the community already associates with the role, and then structuring the shoot so he can perform on set rather than phone it in from a booth, signals a team that understands what made this story connect in the first place. It is an early move, and one casting choice does not guarantee the whole thing lands, but it is the move a production makes when it is listening to the people who built the fandom rather than talking past them. If the rest of the cast is assembled with the same instincts, the crawl is in good hands.
What comes next is the big one. There is still no word on who is playing Carl, and no filming start or release window has been announced. That is the casting that will set the tone for everything else. For now, though, the fandom got the reveal it wanted, and Dinniman celebrated the news himself, welcoming his friend to the role on Instagram. Also worth noting from the same panel: Dinniman confirmed the book series will conclude with Book 9, which he called the hardest book he has ever had to write, while leaving the door open to spinoffs built around side characters.
