Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con was stacked with returning faces, but one confirmation hit a specific nerve for fans who have been with the franchise since the beginning. Hayley Atwell is officially returning as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday, and she showed up in person to make it real.

Atwell appeared on stage alongside Chris Evans and other members of the Doomsday cast, where Marvel confirmed her involvement directly. The news did not come completely out of nowhere. Trade reports, originally from Deadline, had been pointing to her return for a while, so the panel turned a long-running rumor into an official on-stage reveal. The film opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
Atwell first played Peggy in Captain America: The First Avenger back in 2011, then built the role out across The Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, a scene-stealing turn in her own two-season Agent Carter series, and the Endgame cameo that finally gave Steve and Peggy their dance.

Fans and outlets are split on which one shows up. One read is that this is the classic Peggy we already know, since Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers and it makes sense for Captain America’s great love to come along with him. There is already a breadcrumb worth remembering. Evans’ return was revealed back in December 2025 through a teaser slipped in ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash. It showed Steve packing away his Captain America suit inside a 1950s-style house, then cut to him holding a baby, a strong hint at the life he chose with Peggy. That imagery points toward the version of Peggy tied to Steve’s quiet retirement timeline, which lines up with the classic Peggy theory rather than a super soldier variant.
Why This One Matters to Longtime Fans
For the people who have followed the character the longest, this return carries some weight beyond a cameo. Atwell’s last MCU appearance was that Captain Carter variant in Multiverse of Madness, who was killed off almost as quickly as she arrived. Atwell later said that ending was not the trajectory she saw for Peggy, so a real return gives the character a shot at a better note to go out on.
For now, Atwell is keeping the details close. She has said she has not even seen the finished film yet, which makes it hard for her to explain how Peggy fits into the story, though she spoke warmly about reuniting with Evans and their history going back to the earliest days of both their careers. The specifics will stay a mystery until the movie arrives, and that mystery is exactly the point.
