Steve Buscemi is heading to the world of Far Cry. FX announced Tuesday that the eight-time Emmy nominee has joined the live-action series adaptation of Ubisoft’s blockbuster video game franchise, where he will star alongside co-creator Rob Mac and previously announced cast member Lizzy Caplan.
Details on who Buscemi will play are still under wraps, and that goes for the plot as well. What we do know is that the series will follow the games’ signature approach: an anthology format, with each season telling a standalone story in a new setting with a new cast of characters. Think Fargo, but with more exotic locales and considerably more chaos.

The Fargo connection is not a coincidence. The series comes from Noah Hawley, who created FX’s Fargo anthology and Alien: Earth, teaming up with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob Mac. Buscemi, of course, starred in the original 1996 Fargo film from the Coen brothers, which makes this pairing feel like a full-circle moment even though this is technically his first FX series.
Hawley has said the show will not directly adapt any single Far Cry game, instead capturing the spirit that has defined the franchise since 2004: memorable villains, remote and dangerous settings, and stories about ordinary people surviving extraordinary circumstances. With over 100 million unique players across six mainline entries and a stack of spinoffs, there is plenty of DNA to pull from.
Production is set up at Pinewood Studios, with Hawley directing the first two episodes. Filming is expected to begin after Alien: Earth wraps its second season, and Hawley will work with a co-showrunner given how packed his slate is.
Far Cry will air on FX and stream on Hulu, with Disney+ carrying it internationally. Executive producers include Hawley through his 26 Keys banner, Mac through More Better Productions, Simon Emanuel, Emilia Serrano, Nick Frenkel, Monica Macer, Peter Calloway, John Campisi, and Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television.
No premiere date has been announced yet.
