Colin Farrell has put a number on the Penguin’s presence in The Batman Part 2, and it is smaller than most fans expected. Speaking with ScreenRant during press for Sugar season 2, the actor confirmed that Oz Cobb appears in only two scenes in Matt Reeves’ upcoming sequel.
Farrell framed the limited screen time as a gift rather than a slight. He said the small role means he gets to sit back and enjoy the rest of the film, and he had nothing but praise for what Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have put together.
What Farrell Said About the Script
Asked whether he had been able to read the full screenplay, Farrell confirmed he read it from the first page to the last and called it magnificent. He described the story as dark, terrifying, psychologically weighty, and nuanced, and said Reeves had written what he considers a contemporary genre masterpiece that is full of feeling.
It is a strong endorsement from an actor who has spent more time inside this version of Gotham than almost anyone. Farrell first played Oz Cobb in 2022’s The Batman, then carried HBO Max’s The Penguin miniseries, which earned 24 Primetime Emmy nominations and won nine categories. That spin-off ended with Oz cementing his place as the king of Gotham’s underworld, which made his role in the sequel one of the more anticipated threads heading into Part 2.
A Smaller Role Than Originally Teased
The two-scene figure is a noticeable step down from what Farrell described in late 2024. At that point, he said he had been told he would have five or six scenes and that he had signed on for three Batman films. The reduction suggests the sequel is steering its focus elsewhere.
That shift lines up with the expanding cast. The newcomers include Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch. Stan has been widely reported, though not officially confirmed, to be playing Harvey Dent and Two-Face, and he has teased that he will take on many roles. Johansson is rumored to be portraying Harvey’s wife, Gilda Dent, while Dance is linked to Harvey’s father, Christopher Dent. If those reports hold, the Dent family would carry much of the villainous weight this time around, which would explain why the Penguin steps back.
Who Else Is Returning
Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman, with Jeffrey Wright back as Jim Gordon and Andy Serkis also reprising his role. The film is currently in production and is set for release on October 1, 2027.
Even at two scenes, the Penguin’s place in this world is well established, and Farrell’s enthusiasm for the script suggests Reeves has plenty in store beyond Gotham’s reigning crime boss. How Oz fits into a story that appears built around the Dents is one of the more interesting questions hanging over the sequel.
