The origin and use of the Quantum Bands in Marvel Comics and their adaptation in the MCU’s “The Marvels” movie are fascinating aspects of Marvel’s expansive universe.
Comic Book Origin of the Quantum Bands

In Marvel Comics, the Quantum Bands first appeared in 1975 in “Fantastic Four #164”. A character named the Crusader, initially tasked with using the bands to protect Earth, ends up going mad. Mr. Fantastic eventually disarms the Crusader and sends the bands to SHIELD, where they are discovered by Wendell Vaughn, who becomes the first Quasar. The Quantum Bands are energy-manipulating devices, drawing power from the Quantum Zone, enabling flight and the creation of powerful light constructs.
It’s later revealed that the cosmic godlike character Eon once controlled the Quantum Bands and gave them to heroes to guard the universe. While Eon is believed to have created the bands, their exact origins remain mysterious. The comics have seen several Protectors of the Universe using these bands, including Wendell Vaughn and Phyla-Vell.

The Tragic Backstory of the Quantum Bands
An intriguing aspect of the Quantum Bands’ backstory involves the Eternals. A’Lars, an Eternal, and his partner Sui-san, used the Quantum Bands as wedding rings given by Kronos. These bands enabled them to reproduce, leading to the birth of Thanos. This incident highlights the reality-shaping power of the Quantum Bands. However, realizing the evil nature of his son, A’Lars returns the bands to Kronos. This history suggests that the same power that birthed Thanos has been instrumental in empowering generations of heroes.

The Quantum Bands in “The Marvels”

In the MCU’s “The Marvels”, the Quantum Bands are depicted as ancient and legendary artifacts, likely created by a long-dead Kree using lost technology. Kamala Khan possesses one of these bands, while Dar-Benn has the other. The MCU combines elements from both the Quantum Bands and Nega-Bands of the comics. The Quantum Bands in the movie grant teleportation and energy-manipulating abilities to their wearers. These bands are capable of manipulating time and space when united, and significantly enhance the wielder’s strength when separated. For instance, Dar-Benn’s band allows her to absorb light energy and create wormholes, whereas Kamala Khan’s band enables her to create light-based platforms and objects, unlocking her mutant powers.
While the Quantum Bands in the comics are mysterious artifacts linked to cosmic entities and used by heroes like Quasar and Phyla-Vell, in “The Marvels”, they are ancient Kree artifacts with the ability to manipulate time and space, used by Kamala Khan and Dar-Benn. The MCU’s adaptation maintains the essence of the bands’ immense power and mystery, while adding unique elements to fit the movie’s narrative.
