Disney is moving forward again with its live-action Tangled. Early development has resumed with Michael Gracey still attached to direct and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson writing. Scarlett Johansson is circling Mother Gothel, the story’s controlling antagonist and a major driver of the plot.

The project was paused in April after concern around Snow White’s box office. Momentum returned as Disney’s recent wins lean toward modern era remakes with four-quadrant appeal. Lilo and Stitch is 2025’s top MPA release so far worldwide, reinforcing that strategy.

For newcomers, Tangled follows Rapunzel, a princess with magical hair who has lived her life in a tower until a rogue named Flynn Rider crosses her path. Their escape puts her face to face with the truth about her past and with Mother Gothel, who has kept her hidden.

Disney’s live-action team is advancing two tracks. Revitalize proven animated hits from the modern catalog. Seed new properties to build long-term franchises. The recent Impossible Creatures announcement is part of that second lane.

Casting is the next headline. If Johansson signs, attention shifts to Rapunzel and Flynn. Musical direction and tone are open questions. Will the film keep the animated songs and playful energy, or tilt more dramatic around Gothel’s manipulation

Tangled is one of Disney’s strongest modern fairy tales with clear family appeal. If the cast clicks and the music plan lands, it is set up as a mainstream theatrical event.
