Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in talks to take on Spider-Man 4. After months of speculation, it looks like the new director for Tom Holland’s next outing as the web-slinger has been found.
A New Director for Spider-Man
Cretton’s involvement brings new energy to the Spider-Man franchise. He’ll be the fourth director to tackle a Spider-Man solo film, following Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home), Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield), and Sam Raimi (the original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire).
While Sony and Marvel haven’t commented yet, Cretton’s experience with Marvel films and his positive reception for Shang-Chi make him a solid choice.
Spider-Man’s Success So Far
The Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films have been box-office hits, with Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing in nearly $2 billion globally. That film, which featured Maguire, Garfield, and Holland together, was a massive hit and drew in fans of all three eras of Spider-Man.
Now, with Cretton on board, the question is: where does Peter Parker’s story go from here? No Way Home ended with the world forgetting Peter is Spider-Man, including his closest friends like MJ (Zendaya). According to Holland, the creative team has had early talks about the story direction, and they’ve found a reason to move forward with a fourth film.
What’s Next?
Production on Spider-Man 4 is expected to start next year, with Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers back as writers. Kevin Feige from Marvel and Amy Pascal from Sony are producing, and it seems like the team is pushing ahead to get things rolling.
Cretton’s Future with Marvel
Cretton’s Marvel work doesn’t stop with Spider-Man. He’s currently involved in the upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney+ and is still connected to a Shang-Chi sequel. It’s unclear how his involvement with Spider-Man 4 will affect these other projects, but it’s clear Marvel has big plans for him moving forward.
