Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis are officially Scott Free and Big Barda. James Gunn confirmed the casting on Monday for Mister Miracle, Tom King’s animated DCU series from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, and posted a new piece of artwork from the show with the announcement.

The news had already slipped out. Peter Safran named both actors last week in an interview with IGN while promoting Clayface, dropping them almost in passing while praising King’s scripts, which he called “just dynamite.” When fans asked Gunn about it, he joked that Safran’s loose lips had struck again before making it official with Monday’s post.

Darkseid Hiding in Plain Sight
The new image shows a bloodied Scott and Barda staring at each other while an army charges in behind them. Fans quickly found something else in the frame. Between the two leads sits a silhouette with Darkseid’s build and head shape, even without his gray skin and red eyes visible. DC Studios has not announced who will voice him.
The casting also gets the size gap right. Davis stands 5’11” and Hutcherson 5’5″, which matches the way Barda towers over Scott on the page. Mitch Gerads, who drew the original comic, said in a reply to Gunn that both performances are perfect.

Eight Episodes, Aimed at 2028
Safran told Collider that Mister Miracle is targeting 2028 and that he has already seen animatics for all eight 30-minute episodes. King wrote every one of them himself, adapting the 12-issue series he made with Gerads. Safran said more seasons are possible, though none have been ordered.
King’s comic follows Scott, the escape artist Jack Kirby created in 1971, as war rages between Apokolips and New Genesis and he tries to work through the trauma of a life spent fighting Darkseid’s forces. King comes into the show off co-creating Lanterns for HBO, and his Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was the basis for this summer’s Supergirl movie.
No live-action plans for Hutcherson or Davis have been announced. DC Studios’ next release is Clayface, in theaters October 23.
