The Friday the 13th franchise is officially back. Peacock and A24 released the first teaser trailer for Crystal Lake, the long-awaited prequel series that finally arrives after the franchise spent more than a decade tangled in legal limbo.

The series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, and this time the story is told from her perspective. Set in the 1970s before the events of the original 1980 film, Crystal Lake follows Pam as a single mother who cannot shake her grief nearly a year after her young, sickly son Jason drowned in the town lake. When two strangers show up at her door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events begins, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake asking one question: just who is Pam Voorhees?

The teaser leans into atmosphere over carnage, letting Camp Crystal Lake actually feel like a functioning summer camp before things go wrong. It is a smart move for a franchise built on one of horror’s most famous twists, and Cardellini is an inspired choice to carry the emotional weight of a mother’s descent into madness.

Brad Caleb Kane, who also worked on IT: Welcome to Derry, serves as showrunner. The cast also includes William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Callum Vinson, Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik.

All eight hour-long episodes of Crystal Lake premiere October 15 on Peacock.
