A Mr. Terrific series is in development at DC Studios with Edi Gathegi returning and Allan Heinberg (The Sandman) writing the pilot. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which described the project as being in active development as part of a larger look at DC’s upcoming slate.
This is the right move for DC. Michael Holt has been an underutilized character for decades, and Gathegi’s version was the breakout of 2025’s Superman. As part of the Justice Gang alongside Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, he was the hero who actually listened when Lois Lane raised concerns about Lex Luthor, and he played a central role in pulling Superman out of Luthor’s pocket dimension. Audiences walked out of that movie asking for more of him, and James Gunn has made no secret that Mr. Terrific is one of his favorite characters. Also, he’s simply badass.

Heinberg is a strong choice to write the pilot. He developed Netflix’s The Sandman, co-wrote the screenplay for 2017’s Wonder Woman, and co-created Young Avengers at Marvel. His television credits go back through Grey’s Anatomy, The OC, and Gilmore Girls, so DC is handing its breakout character to a writer with deep experience in both superheroes and long-form TV.
Gunn has a track record of turning smaller characters into fan favorites, something he did with Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and he has previously teased an unannounced DCU series in the works. Gathegi also popped up in Peacemaker Season 2 and is set to return in next year’s Man of Tomorrow, so DC has clearly been building toward a bigger role for Holt.
If it moves forward, the series would join Lanterns and the Jimmy Olsen project on DC’s television side, continuing to build out the world introduced in Superman.
