Disney’s new Moana live-action trailer gives fans a better idea of what this remake is aiming for, and the early message is pretty clear. This movie looks far more interested in honoring the original than reinventing it.
The trailer puts a strong spotlight on Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, and that may be the film’s biggest advantage. She brings a grounded presence that helps the movie feel more like a real-world adventure instead of just a scene-for-scene recreation. Dwayne Johnson’s return as Maui is also front and center, with Disney clearly hoping his larger-than-life energy carries over into live action.
One of the more interesting things about the trailer is how much it sells the physical world of the film. The island setting, the ocean, and the sense of scale all seem designed to make this version feel more tangible. That could help separate it from other Disney remakes that sometimes feel too polished or too dependent on visual effects.
At the same time, the movie still has a challenge ahead of it. Moana is not an old film, and a lot of people still have a strong connection to the animated version. Because of that, the live-action remake will probably be judged less on nostalgia and more on whether it adds enough to justify returning to this story so soon.
For now, the trailer does its job. It looks familiar, visually ambitious, and built around the same emotional heart that made the original work. Whether that is enough will depend on how well the performances, music, and adventure come together when Moana hits theaters on July 10, 2026.
