The 98th Academy Awards took place on Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Conan O’Brien returning to host. One Battle After Another led the night with six wins, including Best Picture and Best Director, while Sinners came in as one of the biggest stories of the ceremony after entering the night with a record 16 nominations. The show also introduced Best Casting, the Academy’s first new competitive category since Best Animated Feature was added in 2001.
Beyond the biggest headlines, the night also delivered a few standout milestones. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for Sinners, Jessie Buckley took Best Actress for Hamnet, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman to win Best Cinematography. What really stands out from this year’s Oscars is how concentrated the wins were at the top. One Battle After Another walked away as the night’s biggest overall winner, but Sinners still had one of the most memorable showings thanks to Michael B. Jordan’s win and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s historic cinematography victory. For a ceremony that had plenty of expected frontrunners, it still ended up giving the season a few big moments people will be talking about for a while.
