Fresh off the buzz from his upcoming lead role in the HBO series Lanterns, Aaron Pierre has officially signed on to reprise his role as John Stewart in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow. The casting confirms that DC Studios is moving fast to integrate its television stars into its theatrical blockbusters. While we’ll first see Pierre’s Stewart as a rookie recruit this August, his inclusion in the Superman sequel suggests he’ll be a seasoned powerhouse by the time he meets the Man of Steel.

An Uneasy Alliance Against Brainiac

Pierre joins a stacked cast for the 2027 sequel, which reportedly follows David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor as they are forced into a reluctant partnership. Their common enemy is the world-collecting android Brainiac, played by German star Lars Eidinger.

The addition of John Stewart adds a much-needed tactical layer to the conflict. As a former Marine with a penchant for rigid constructs and discipline, Stewart’s “space-cop” energy is expected to be the perfect foil to the more idealistic Superman and the manipulative, ego-driven Luthor.

Building a Seamless Universe

This move is the first major proof-of-concept for the new DCU’s “connected” promise. By moving Pierre directly from a “True Detective”-style grounded mystery on HBO to a cosmic epic in theaters, Gunn is effectively erasing the line between TV and film. While it’s still unconfirmed if Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan or Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner will join him in the sequel, Pierre’s Stewart is clearly being positioned as a central pillar of the new Justice League lineup.

Release Date and Production

Production on Man of Tomorrow is slated to begin this April in Atlanta, with James Gunn once again at the helm as writer and director. Fans won’t have to wait until 2027 to see Pierre in action, however, as the first season of Lanterns is still on track for its August premiere on HBO.
