After years of silence that left fans wondering if the “Terror that Flaps in the Night” had been permanently grounded, legendary voice actor Jim Cummings has finally broken the silence regarding the highly anticipated Darkwing Duck reboot.
In a recent update, Cummings confirmed that the project, which is being developed for Disney+, remains in active development despite its relatively slow progress. The revival was first announced in 2020 with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached as executive producers through their Point Grey Pictures banner. While updates have been sporadic over the last five years, Cummings’ latest comments offer a glimpse into the creative direction of the new series.

A New Chapter for Drake Mallard According to Cummings, the production has already reached the recording stage for certain segments, though he described the current progress as having recorded “basically one offshoot so far.” The actor, who has voiced the titular character since the original series debuted in 1991, hinted that the new iteration will respect the foundations of the classic show while acknowledging the passage of time.
One of the most significant revelations is the status of Darkwing’s adopted daughter, Gosalyn. Cummings noted that in this version of St. Canard, Gosalyn has “grown up,” suggesting a time jump or a shift in the family dynamic that could lean into a “legacy sequel” feel rather than a traditional ground-up reboot. Despite these changes, Cummings reassured fans that the core essence of the show remains intact, stating, “If it’s not broke, you don’t fix it.”

The Road to Disney+ The journey back to the screen has not been without its hurdles. The project has reportedly undergone a creative reshuffling, including changes to the writing team, which contributed to the “slower track” of production. Original creator Tad Stones is also reportedly involved as a consultant, ensuring the reboot stays true to the spirit of the 90s Disney Afternoon staple.
While a formal release date has yet to be announced, the confirmation that the original voice of Drake Mallard is back in the recording booth is the most concrete sign of life the project has seen in years. For now, fans are encouraged to “stay tuned” as Seth Rogen and Disney continue to refine the return of the masked mallard.
