A live-action Baldur’s Gate TV series is now in development at HBO, with Craig Mazin attached to create, write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner.
The biggest hook for fans is that this is not being positioned as a straight retelling. The current plan is for the series to continue the story after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, following new protagonists while still bringing back familiar characters from the game’s world.

On the producing side, Hasbro Entertainment is involved, and Mazin is developing the show within the broader Dungeons & Dragons universe. Larian Studios is not involved in making the series, which raises the obvious big creative question: how do you follow a game built around player choice while still landing on a version of events that works as “canon” for television?
In a statement included in early reporting, Mazin emphasized how personally invested he is in the game and its world, describing it as a dream project and highlighting his respect for Wizards of the Coast and Swen Vincke’s team. HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi also backed the pick, pointing to Mazin’s track record for character-driven, immersive worldbuilding.
There’s no casting, release window, or production timetable confirmed yet.
