If you were planning to see The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender on the big screen, that plan might be changing.

A new report says the upcoming animated feature is no longer set for a theatrical release and will instead premiere on Paramount+. The same report frames the move as part of a broader Avatar push tied to Paramount’s streaming strategy.

Here’s the wrinkle: Paramount Pictures’ own movie page still lists the film with an October 9, 2026 date, which has been the public theatrical target for a while. So, either an update is coming, or the plan is still settling behind the scenes.

What This Movie Is Supposed to Be

This film is the first big feature under Avatar Studios, and it’s built around a simple hook fans have wanted for years: Aang and the rest of Team Avatar, older, dealing with the world after the original series. It has a new voice cast for the core characters, with Lauren Montgomery directing and William Mata attached as co-director.

Why a Paramount+ Move Would Be a Big Deal

A shift from theaters to Paramount+ would be a meaningful statement about where Paramount thinks the franchise works best. The Avatar brand is huge, but animated theatrical releases are a tougher bet than they used to be, and putting Aang’s return behind a subscription wall guarantees a massive opening weekend audience without worrying about box office legs.

It’s also notable because Paramount’s newer leadership has talked publicly about leaning into theatrical releases and not treating streaming movies as a priority. If this report is accurate, it suggests Avatar could be important enough to bend that strategy, or that the studio sees this particular title as a better fit for streaming.

What to Watch For Next

If Paramount is really making the Paramount+ switch, the next signs should be pretty obvious:

A public confirmation from Paramount, Nickelodeon, or Avatar Studios
An update to the official Paramount Pictures film page and marketing language
A clearer timeline for how this lines up with the broader Avatar slate, including the already announced Avatar: Seven Havens series

For now, fans should treat this as “reported, not finalized” until Paramount updates the official release plan.
