Paramount is giving the heroes in a half shell another big screen reboot. The studio has set a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie for a November 17, 2028 theatrical release, described as a hybrid of live action and CGI in the style of the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
Veteran producer Neal H. Moritz, whose credits include Sonic and the Fast & Furious series, is attached to shepherd the project, positioning TMNT as another all ages tentpole on Paramount’s slate. It will be the first Turtles feature to mix live action and CG characters since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
This reboot is being treated as its own track, separate from the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem universe. Mutant Mayhem reinvigorated the brand in 2023 with a stylized animated look and teen focused tone, and its sequel is already dated for September 17, 2027. The new movie, by contrast, is designed as a four quadrant family play, with human characters portrayed in live action while the Turtles themselves are fully CG.

The reboot also reflects a larger course correction at the studio. Earlier this year, Paramount and new owner Skydance were reported to have canceled the animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles during production and to be rethinking how the brand is used across film and television. At the same time, a darker live-action adaptation of acclaimed comic The Last Ronin, planned as an R rated feature, has reportedly been put on hold while the family friendly reboot moves forward, though executives are said to be keeping that option on the table for later.
It is the latest evolution in a franchise that has been reinvented repeatedly since the late 1980s. The original 1990 live action film set a surprisingly serious tone, followed by lighter early 90s sequels, a standalone CG movie in 2007, and the more bombastic Michael Bay produced films in the mid 2010s. Each new take has walked a line between the rougher comic book roots and the kid friendly image that turned the Turtles into a merchandising powerhouse.
Not everyone is thrilled with the new direction. Commentary from longtime fans has framed the shelving of The Last Ronin as a missed chance to give the now thirty and forty something core audience a bolder, more adult TMNT story, rather than another family focused reboot. Others argue that pairing a Sonic style hybrid format with a recognizable brand like TMNT is a logical way for Paramount to build out reliable, family driven franchises.

Key creative details are still under wraps. There is no public information yet about the director, cast, or specific storyline, and it is not clear whether the 2028 film will retell the origin story or jump straight into an established team dynamic. Given that Mutant Mayhem 2 arrives in 2027 and a new Sonic film is slated for December 22, 2028, it looks like Paramount is mapping out a multi year calendar where the Turtles sit alongside Sonic and Top Gun as core theatrical pillars.
For now, what fans can circle is the date. November 17, 2028 is when this latest version of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael is set to step out of the sewers and into theaters again.
