Nintendo has finally revealed the first official images from the live action Legend of Zelda movie, giving fans a clear look at Link and Princess Zelda outside the world of animation and pixels. The photos, released through Nintendo’s official channels and the Nintendo Today app, show the two heroes in costume as filming gets underway.

The shots place Benjamin Evan Ainsworth’s Link and Bo Bragason’s Zelda in a wide green field that feels instantly familiar to anyone who has wandered Hyrule. Zelda wears a blue tunic with a quiver of arrows on her back and a bow at her side, while Link is in a green outfit that nods to his classic look. Notably, the Master Sword is nowhere to be seen yet, which has fans already speculating about where in the story these scenes take place.

The film is directed by Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner series and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and is set for a theatrical release on May 7, 2027. Production is underway in New Zealand, which explains the sweeping natural landscapes seen in the first image. Ball has described his vision as a serious fantasy adventure that still keeps the sense of wonder and playfulness associated with Zelda, drawing inspiration from both The Lord of the Rings and the work of Hayao Miyazaki.

Nintendo is producing the movie with Sony and Arad Productions as part of a broader push into theatrical releases after the success of The Super Mario Bros Movie and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy film. For longtime fans, these first photos are less about plot reveals and more about reassurance that the creative team understands the look and tone of the games. If this first glimpse is any sign, the film is aiming for something that feels authentically Zelda rather than just another fantasy adaptation with a familiar name.
