A new entry in Universal’s pulp-adventure franchise is moving forward, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in talks to return and the Radio Silence filmmaking duo set to direct. That pairing alone tells you the tone Universal is aiming for: swashbuckling, scary, and fun.

Early reporting also points to a clean narrative handoff. Trade coverage indicates this will not be a reboot, but a continuation that ignores the events of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. That would effectively reunite Fraser’s Rick O’Connell with Weisz’s Evelyn as audiences remember them from the first two films.

The project has a script in hand by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill, The Family Plan), giving Radio Silence a finished draft to build on while casting and scheduling firm up.

Positioning this as a sequel that sidesteps the third film restores the core dynamic of Rick and Evy while letting the filmmakers chart a new course without recasting baggage. It also taps directly into the nostalgia for Stephen Sommers’ 1999–2001 duology, which is what fans have been asking for during Fraser’s recent renaissance.

Who’s making it

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, best known for Ready or Not and revitalizing the Scream series, are attached to direct. Their track record suggests a crowd-pleasing mix of momentum, character banter, and sharp set pieces that fits the Mummy brand.

Key details like filming dates, supporting cast, and release timing have not been announced yet. Universal hasn’t commented publicly beyond the trade reporting. Expect those pieces to fall into place as negotiations conclude and the studio locks a production window.
