Mortal Kombat is not slowing down. At New York Comic Con, writer Jeremy Slater said he has already started writing a third movie after the studio saw early buzz for Mortal Kombat II and decided the audience is there.
Before the next chapter arrives, Mortal Kombat II is locked for May 15, 2026 in theaters. The sequel previously held a fall 2025 slot.

Director Simon McQuoid addressed the date change at the NYCC panel, calling the film a victim of its own success and pointing to strong test screening momentum.
The panel brought out Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford, who play Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn. They join returning stars including Lewis Tan, Ludi Lin, Jessica McNamee, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
Fans also got a behind the scenes featurette and a first look at Johnny Cage squaring up with Baraka. The clip sets up Cage arriving with Liu Kang, Sonya, and Jax to make the case for an alliance against Shao Kahn.

If you are new to the films, Mortal Kombat follows Earthrealm fighters who are pulled into a multirealm war tied to the iconic tournament. The 2021 movie rebooted the series for a new audience, and the sequel now leans further into Kitana, Jade, and the power struggle around Outworld and Edenia.
The fast greenlight for a third movie suggests Warner Bros. and New Line see a runway for a full arc that lines up with what longtime players remember from the games. Exact plot details are under wraps, but the studio’s confidence and the NYCC crowd response point to a franchise that is building toward a bigger confrontation.
