TLDR

  • New US prices: PS5 is 549.99 dollars. PS5 Digital Edition is 499.99 dollars. PS5 Pro is 749.99 dollars.
  • Effective date: Thursday, August 21, 2025.
  • Accessories: No change announced.
  • Reason: Economic pressure that includes tariffs on imported electronics.

Context: Similar increases already landed in Europe and Oceania in April. Rivals have moved their prices up in recent months as well.

Sony is raising the price of every PS5 model in the United States by 50 dollars starting Thursday, August 21, 2025. The new tags are simple. PS5 is 549.99 dollars. PS5 Digital Edition is 499.99 dollars. PS5 Pro is 749.99 dollars. Sony says accessories stay the same price for now.

Why this is happening

Sony points to a tough economic environment. That includes new tariffs on imported electronics that increase costs along the supply chain. Companies can eat that cost or pass it on. Sony chose to pass some of it on here in the US after already doing so in other regions earlier this year.

How we got here

In April, Sony raised PS5 prices across parts of Europe and Oceania. In May, company leaders warned that US adjustments were on the table as they watched tariff policy and currency swings. The US increase arrives now, and it hits all three PS5 models.

How competitors are moving

Microsoft lifted prices on Xbox hardware and some accessories this spring. The Xbox Series X digital model sits at 549.99 dollars in the US. Nintendo raised prices on the original Switch family and several accessories at the start of August, while keeping Switch 2 hardware and game pricing unchanged for now. The result is a more expensive console shelf across the board, not just for PlayStation.

What this means if you planned to buy

If you were on the fence, you have a small window to grab a console at the old price before retailers update listings. Some stores may lag for a short time. Bundles and refurb units could soften the hit. If you want the cheapest way into the ecosystem, the Digital Edition becomes the value play again, especially if you are fine with a library of digital purchases and do not need discs. If you plan to buy a Pro for its frame rate and ray tracing advantages, expect fewer impulse deals and plan your purchase around holiday sales.

The bigger picture

Console prices usually drift down as a generation matures. This cycle looks different. Tariffs, currency swings, and higher component costs have flipped the script. Watch for two things next. First, whether retailers use bundles to hide price changes and keep momentum. Second, whether production footprints shift. Sony has said US manufacturing is on the table as one way to reduce tariff exposure, though that is not a quick switch
