Critical Role is taking a bold new step for its next main campaign. After the conclusion of Bells Hells in February and a string of successful side projects like Exandria Unlimited and Wildemount Wildlings, fans have been eager to hear what’s next. At their August 2 live show in Indiana, the Critical Role team pulled back the curtain on Campaign 4 and it is not just a continuation, it is a reinvention.

The biggest surprise is that Matt Mercer, who has been the Game Master for every main Critical Role campaign since the beginning, will be stepping aside. Brennan Lee Mulligan will take over as the new GM. Mulligan is already well known for his work on Dimension 20 and recently appeared in Wildemount Wildlings as Padmund Pondhop.

Mulligan’s approach to storytelling has earned him a strong following in the TTRPG space. His blend of deep character work and expansive worldbuilding makes him a strong choice to guide this new adventure. Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham shared that Brennan’s passion and creativity make him the right person for this next chapter.
The other big shift is the setting. Campaign 4 will not take place in Exandria. Instead, the team is venturing into a brand new world. Details about the setting are still under wraps, but Creative Director Marisha Ray said everything about the new campaign is fresh. That includes the tone, the world, and the possibilities ahead.

So far, no cast members have been confirmed, and it is still unclear whether Matt Mercer will return as a player. The system they will use has also not been announced, but with Beacon.tv hosting the premiere on October 2, more information should be coming soon.
For longtime fans and curious newcomers, this season looks like a turning point for Critical Role. With a new GM, a new setting, and a new energy, Campaign 4 promises something entirely different.
