In a movie packed with iconic characters, one silent gray-skinned oddball has quietly captured the hearts of fans. Mr. Handsome, Lex Luthor’s strange and stoic companion in Superman, is quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently shared the character’s origin on social media, along with behind-the-scenes photos. His post adds surprising depth to a character who says nothing but leaves a lasting impression.
According to Gunn, Mr. Handsome was created by a 12-year-old Lex Luthor in a Petri dish during a childhood experiment to create human life. Gunn wrote, “He didn’t come out so well, but he just might be the only one in the world Lex has any true sentiment for.”
That unexpected emotion is on display in the film. A framed photo of Mr. Handsome on Lex’s desk hints at a rare soft spot from one of DC’s coldest minds. Although the character only appears briefly as a pocket-dimension chauffeur, his eerie design and touching backstory make him stand out.
Mr. Handsome is played by Trevor Newlin, known for physical creature work in films like Smile 2 and Alien Romulus. While some fans have speculated about connections to other DC characters, Gunn has confirmed that this version of Mr. Handsome is completely original to the DCU.
This reveal comes shortly after Gunn shared another hidden gem from the movie. A clear image of the History of Metahumans mural in the Hall of Justice gave fans their first glimpse at several future heroes in the DCU.
Superman is already being praised for its tone and pacing, but it is the strange side characters like Mr. Handsome that are helping it build a unique identity. In a sea of epic battles and legacy characters, this quiet creature made in a lab by a lonely child might be the weirdest and most memorable of them all.
