After more than two years of near silence, Amazon’s God of War adaptation is officially making headway. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed the series is deep into script development, with the writers’ room fully active and building what he calls a “rich and fascinating” version of Kratos’ world.

Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, admitted that adapting a video game is a new challenge for him. But the depth of the source material quickly won him over.

“It’s been fascinating to sink my teeth into,” Moore said. “The more I dove in, the more impressed I was with how much worldbuilding has already been done. This mythology is dense, and there’s so much emotional weight.”

A major influence behind that world is game director Cory Barlog, who Moore praised repeatedly. According to Moore, Barlog doesn’t just know the story beats—he knows every artifact, every subplot, every corner of the universe.

“Cory Barlog is a genius. I don’t throw that word around lightly,” Moore said. “You ask him about anything and he has a full explanation that connects to the larger story. It’s like a giant novel. Honestly, even more layered than Outlander.”

The show will follow the 2018 game’s Norse mythology arc, centering on Kratos and Atreus. However, it will not be a scene-by-scene remake. Instead, Moore said the plan is to preserve the tone, characters, and emotional themes while reimagining how they work in live action.

“This is an adaptation. We’re holding onto the spirit of the game, but making something that fits this format. There’s a lot we can play with creatively.”

Despite the growing momentum, fans should temper their expectations about when the show will premiere. Filming will not begin until 2026 at the earliest. Moore stated plainly that there is no confirmed start date and that the priority remains on refining the scripts.

Even with two seasons reportedly greenlit and a ten-episode debut planned, Moore is taking things one season at a time.

“I try not to get ahead of myself. Let’s just get Season 1 right. That’s the job right now.”

This marks the first solid update since a major shakeup in 2024 when original showrunner Rafe Judkins and writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus departed. With Moore now in charge and Barlog still creatively involved, the adaptation seems to have found its foundation.

If all goes as planned, God of War could be Amazon’s next major prestige series—a grounded, emotionally heavy fantasy that avoids the usual pitfalls of game-to-screen adaptations.
