Amazon is taking another swing at video game adaptations, this time with the iconic Wolfenstein franchise. Known for its gritty combat and alt-history storyline, Wolfenstein is being developed into a live-action TV series at Amazon MGM Studios with Patrick Somerville at the helm. Somerville, who created Station Eleven and worked on The Leftovers, will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Plot details are still under wraps, but the official logline is as direct as it gets: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.” That lines up with what fans expect from Wolfenstein—a brutal, fast-paced battle against an alternate-history Nazi regime obsessed with occult experiments and bizarre technology.

At the center of the games is William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, a World War II soldier turned unstoppable one-man army. Over the years, his story has blended pulp action with dark themes, offering everything from mutant super-soldiers to high-tech Nazi moon bases. With 14 games released since the early 80s, the franchise has built a legacy as one of gaming’s most relentless shooter series.

Kilter Films, the team behind Fallout and Westworld, is on board as executive producers. That includes Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy, who have a strong track record turning sci-fi material into compelling television. James Altman from Keyframe Films and Jerk Gustafsson from MachineGames, the studio behind the most recent Wolfenstein games, will also executive produce.

This project is part of Amazon’s growing library of game-based shows. Alongside Wolfenstein, the studio is developing series based on Mass Effect, God of War, and Warhammer 40,000, with Henry Cavill leading the latter. The success of Fallout proved there’s a large and hungry audience for these kinds of stories.

What makes Wolfenstein stand out is its unapologetically over-the-top tone. Nazi robots, zombie experiments, and retro-futuristic weapons are all part of the package. But with someone like Somerville involved, the show might also explore the emotional weight behind the violence, tapping into B.J.’s tortured heroism and the horrors of war.

If this series embraces the franchise’s signature style while building a smart, layered narrative, it could hit the sweet spot between fan service and prestige television. And for longtime players, seeing B.J. Blazkowicz blast through the screen will be a satisfying full-circle moment.
