On the latest episode of Distance Nerding, the crew dug into one of the more exciting Marvel rumors in recent memory. Marvel might finally be pulling the trigger on its long-teased supernatural corner. That means Midnight Sons could actually be happening. With Werewolf by Night 2 reportedly in development and Ghost Rider potentially stepping up as a lead, this darker part of the MCU seems ready to break out.

Werewolf by Night 2 is reportedly in the works

The original Werewolf by Night special was a surprise hit when it dropped in 2022. It didn’t come with the usual MCU hype, but it quickly became one of the most beloved Disney+ entries thanks to its retro horror style and practical effects. Now, a sequel is being developed, and it sounds like more than just another one-off. Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing are all expected to return, and their next outing may help introduce something much bigger.

This is where the Midnight Sons come in.

Ghost Rider may be leading the team

Blade was the obvious frontrunner to lead the supernatural squad, but with his movie still in flux, another character might take the wheel. Rumors suggest Ghost Rider will now be the central figure. That actually makes a lot of sense. In the comics, Ghost Rider is often a key player in the Midnight Sons, and this could be a fresh way to bring him into the MCU while giving fans something very different from the current Marvel lineup.

The potential team lineup

If Marvel goes all in, this is the kind of lineup we might see:

  • Ghost Rider
  • Moon Knight
  • Blade
  • Elsa Bloodstone
  • Werewolf by Night
  • Man-Thing
  • Wong
  • Possibly Doctor Strange

Moon Knight is rumored to return, though it may not be through a second season. Wong continues to pop up as a connective thread between corners of the MCU, and he could take on a Nick Fury-style role for this team. Mephisto was teased in Ironheart, and that connection alone opens the door for Ghost Rider and other occult characters to unite against him.

Why this could work

Marvel needs to change things up. A supernatural corner filled with gothic horror, emotional weight, and weird team dynamics is a strong way to do it. The studio is already scaling back its TV output, focusing more on theatrical releases. A Midnight Sons movie, grounded in characters already introduced or teased, gives them something fresh while building on existing interest.

There’s also something to be said for letting these characters shine outside of traditional superhero formulas. The success of Werewolf by Night proved that Marvel fans are open to different tones and genres. A supernatural team-up would only expand that.

A good bet for Marvel’s future

The Distance Nerding hosts made it clear. Fans are done waiting. Marvel has laid the groundwork, teased the players, and danced around this concept for years. If Werewolf by Night 2 helps move things forward and Ghost Rider gets his moment, this could finally be the supernatural epic fans have been waiting for.
