It’s finally happening. The X-Men are officially heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now we know who’s steering the ship. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier will helm the much-anticipated mutant reboot.
Feige dropped the news during a recent press roundtable while promoting The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Schreier, who just made his MCU debut with Thunderbolts, was rumored to be in the running for X-Men, but this is the first time Marvel’s top brass has confirmed it.
“It’s official, Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky,” Feige said. “The script’s underway.”
Schreier’s work on Thunderbolts apparently impressed Marvel enough to trust him with one of its most iconic teams. Feige praised Schreier’s ability to handle character-driven stories, particularly among younger ensembles — something that lines up perfectly with Marvel’s vision for the X-Men’s future.
“He has his pulse on… a younger demographic,” Feige said. “That’s important for Thunderbolts, much more important for X-Men.”
Feige also acknowledged the challenge of bringing the X-Men into the MCU without repeating what’s already been done in previous films. With so many classic arcs already explored in Fox’s long-running X-Men franchise, Marvel is taking its time to figure out how to reinvent these characters while honoring their roots.
“There’s so much more to tap into,” Feige said. “So many sagas within sagas.”
As of now, Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) is writing the script, and that work is still in progress. The X-Men won’t arrive until after the current Multiverse Saga wraps, meaning it may be a while before fans see Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, and the rest in action.
Still, this announcement feels like a big step. With Schreier confirmed and the script underway, Marvel is finally putting its mutant plans into motion.
