In Disney’s long list of remakes and prequels, one character quietly continues to outshine the rest: Rafiki. After watching the new Mufasa movie, the Disney Moms Gone Wrong crew had one clear takeaway. Rafiki stole the show. And if Disney is going to keep returning to the Pride Lands, it might be time to let this wise old baboon lead his own film.

Sure, Mufasa tried to deepen the legacy of Simba’s father, but the most impactful emotional moments came from Rafiki’s connection to Mufasa. He was the one with real insight, real mystery, and real presence. In a movie packed with familiar beats, Rafiki’s story stood out as something new.

The Wise One With Depth

From his first scene in The Lion King, Rafiki has always been more than comic relief. He’s a spiritual guide, a mentor, and somehow always in the right place at the right time. But we’ve never seen where that came from. What made him the trusted figure we know? How did he come to wield so much wisdom?

Mufasa gave us a glimpse. In a touching scene, Rafiki tells a young lion, “You are the brother,” hinting at a long bond built on something deeper than blood. It showed a side of him we don’t usually get to see. And it worked.

A Rafiki Movie Would Be Something Different

Disney has been rehashing familiar stories for years. A Rafiki film could finally break the cycle. His backstory wouldn’t have the same plot expectations or need to match an existing classic. It could be a mystical journey, a buddy adventure, or even a surreal tale about discovering one’s role in the world. It could dive into spiritual lore, ancient Pride Lands traditions, or even his earliest moments of prophecy.

Plus, the film could lean into bold, unique visuals. Rafiki is a character who lives in the symbolic and the strange. His movie could look and feel different from every other Lion King project.

The Audience Is Ready

Rafiki has been a fan favorite for decades. From stage shows to theme parks to merchandise, people love him. And yet, Disney has never given him the lead. That feels like a missed opportunity, especially when the latest prequel shows just how powerful his story could be.

As the Disney Moms Gone Wrong said, “Give me a movie about Rafiki. How about that, Disney? Do something you haven’t done before.”

They’re absolutely right.

In short
If Disney wants to keep exploring the Lion King universe, it should stop circling the same story and give Rafiki his own path. He’s always been the soul of the Pride Lands. Maybe it’s time we heard his voice as the main story for once.
